Environmental Monitoring and Education at the Community School

Old Field Succession: Includes setting up permanent transects on the Community School grounds. Students can learn use of a dichotomous key, plant ID and data collection techniques. Species lists can be used over the long-term to monitor successional development (ties into biodiversity monitoring project and meteorological data).

Post-cut Diversity Analysis: Working with the timber extraction contractor students can set up plots immediately after removal of P.strobus to inventory successional biodiversity. Includes monitoring which species are growing back, number & type of invasive exotics etc. (Also ties into biodiversity monitoring and climate change).

Low-elevation Ozone Monitoring: Re-establish the monitoring of five white pine individuals for the effects of Tropospheric ozone. Includes seasonally clipping new growth specimens to be sent to UNH for REIP analysis. Students will be involved with setting up and maintaining annual qualitative analysis of tree vitality and seasonal woody production.
